4 out of 5 stars A real treat, but be ready for glitches   September 2, 2010
J. Hinshaw (San Jose, CA USA)
I purchased the Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-Ray player shortly after purchasing my first HD TV in January 2010. The TV is a Samsung Plasma unit and I wanted to ensure that both the TV and DVD player were from the same manufacturer, and given the reviews listed here on Amazon, I was cautiously optimisitic that this purchase would turn out well.

After 8 months, I can plainly state that this player delivers as advertised. The picture clarity, resolution and color are all light years better than what I had been watching with my previous player and analog TV.

Admittedly, I am not a techno geek and I always wait until a product cycle has reached a mature stage beforing making a buy. Also, I have watched less than 10 Blu-Ray movies, but the ones that I have watched thus far (Avatar being the most notable), offer picture graphics and quality that exceed anything I have watched in my home and rival movie theatre quality.

Even now, I still catch myself marveling when watching certain movie sequences, especially those that are long view shots as well as close-ups that often depict performer facial imperfections that I had never seen with such clarity before.

My only reservations with this player are as follows:

1) It will sometimes hick up and black out for a moment and switch to one of several other picture settings (i.e. movie to dynamic). This happened last week 3 separate times during one viewing, however it does not occur on a consistent basis.
2) I was forced to call customer service this week when the unit froze and would not respond to manual or remote commands (play, FF, stop). Instead, the readout on the player displayed "CLOSE" instead of going through the typical sequence of upload steps to get to the DVD PLAY mode. After calling the Samsung 800 number and talking to a service techician (very rough english) I had to do the following:

1) Unplug the unit from the power strip
2) Press and hold the power button while unplugged for 10 seconds
3) Plug the unit into the power source
4) Restart the unit with a DVD installed

This fix served to reset the power source and the unit began working again.

I have purposely AVOIDED accepting any firmware upgrades, based on what I have read here at Amazon, so my problem did not require some of the more elaborate fixes that have been documented by others, but the specific fix to my issue was not covered in the owners manual nor could I locate a solution on their website.

In summary, very happy with the players performance but slightly concerned because I sense the technology is still not foolproof and when I spend more than twice what it would cost for a non Blu-Ray DVD player, I expect both performance and long term quality/reliability.

4 out of 5 stars Samsung bd-p1600 past its prime but still works fine   August 30, 2010

At the time I bought this, it was state of the art. Now, they are more resolution, read, upload, download faster, and are lighter. All in all though, it still does well for most things. Only criticism is that you have to purchase Samsung's USB WiFi adaptor if you cant connect with a wire for internet access(you dont need internet access for anything but the online services like Netflix). allmost a hundered bucks was a bit much after buying the BD Player check the options of the other players with WiFi built in and account for the price. I wasn't sure whether to take a chance with this player based on other reviews mentioning the firmware upgrade issues. It's only been a little over a month now but so far...so good. Video quality of Blu-ray discs are great but more surprising to me was how nice it was on the upscaled DVDs. I also use it with Neflix and the quality is great for that as well. My expereince is that you can not go wrong wi9th samsung products except the refridgerators are hard to get parts for.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!   August 23, 2010

I've had a BD-P1590. It never worked! I was told by Samsung that I had to download software to correct the problem. I tried three times and it still didn't work. Then they said they would send me a CD with the software on it. It didn't work! Then they said they would send it again...it didn't work! Then the company I bought it from agreed to exchange it for a BD-P1600. It didn't work! I got about an hour into the first movie and it stopped. The company refused to exchange it again. Samsung said to send it back to them for repair. I got it back three weeks later and guess what...it didn't work!!! They then told me the only thing they could do is try to repair it again. Again I sent it back. Again I got it back and it didn't work. Finally they said to sent it back to them and they would finally agree to replace it. I sent it back and now they are saying it will take up to 3 weeks from when I sent it in to get the replacement. All together it has been well over 6 months and I have yet to watch a movie on this blu-ray player. Now they are sending me the BD-C5500. My advice...don't buy a Samsung. I was told by a salesman that Sony makes all the Samsung players anyway. Maybe they are trying to give Samsung a bad name by making DVD players that don't work! I have another older Samsung Blu-ray player that works perfectly. Don't know why the later models don't work, but apparently they can't repair them either. I believe that they make people jump through all these hoops before replacing it hoping that they will give up and just go out and buy another one.

2 out of 5 stars DO NOT ATTACH TO THE INTERNET   August 21, 2010
Jeff
Like many others here, I thought this to be a great machine... until Samsung pushed a firmware update over the internet connection. Now I have to unplug it every couple of movies to unfreeze it. The wireless usb atachment has never worked on my Netgear or Linksys routers, it will only connect to my old D-Link (11-B). The drive grinds when searching and the remote only works half the time. Given the problems everyone else is having, I ain't even trying tech support. I'll just ebay the POS and try another brand. Last time I'm going with Samsung.

4 out of 5 stars Good Player   August 14, 2010
ConsumerMark
I have had this player and it is well used for years now. It has never failed me and works good. The video quality seems good but I'm still using an old CRT TV. I like that Samsung continually tries to improve their product by offering firmware updates. I play DVD, Blu-Ray, and Netflix on it. No problems with any of them. I would buy it again.
